Membership Spotlight – The Sound Lab

Membership Spotlight highlights the work of our member organisations and outline how other individuals and NGOs can support them. Below we shine the light and providing a warm welcome to one of our newest members – The Sound Lab.

Active since 2003, The Sound Lab is a grassroots, largely volunteer-run charity providing creative opportunities to communities across Glasgow and beyond. The Sound Lab believe that opportunities to make music and be creative should not only be available for those who can readily access and afford it: music making should be available to everyone. Their vision is that, irrespective of age, gender, race, ethnicity or economic background, everyone should be able to access the resources and support they need to fulfil their creative potential.

The Sound Lab are a proudly small organisation; made up of a dedicated team including their expert tutors who, together, bring free music and creativity to hundreds of young people every year. Projects cover a broad range of styles aimed at a wide range of participants. Activities include singing, song-writing, electronic music production, drums, guitar, keyboard, drumming, DJ skills, MC skills, film-making, photography, graffiti art and editing, audio recording, song writing and live performance. Young people’s desires and opinions help to shape the Sound Lab’s projects, and individual music mentoring and tuition support is led by what they want to do.

Recent initiatives have included the Youth Music funded New Sounds Academy, the ‘Drawing Together’ research project looking at building positive refugee experiences across Norway, Finland and Scotland, the Musicares project in association with the Scottish Music Centre, and many more. Sound Lab’s activities are constantly updating so be sure to check their social media and website for up-to-date information.

Sound Lab are new members of Together, however their Chair, Paul Sullivan, has been involved for a few years! The organisation is really pleased to be a part of the Together network and think about ways in which the young people they engage with can greater influence policy changes.

If Sound Lab were an animal, they would be an elephant: playful, curious, driven and importantly – connected within their community.
