Membership Spotlight highlights the work of our member organisations and outlines how other individuals and NGOs can support them. We are shining a light on respectme as we approach #AntiBullyingWeek!
respectme is Scotland’s Anti-Bullying Service. Established in 2007, we are wholly funded by the Scottish Government and jointly managed by the Scottish Action for Mental Health (SAMH) and LGBT Youth Scotland.
We aim to build the capacity of all adults who work with, or care for, children and young people, to give them the practical skills, competence and confidence to respond to children who are bullied and those who bully others.
Our vision is of a respecting, just, equal, and inclusive Scotland, in which all children and young people can live free from bullying and harassment and are encouraged to reach their full potential – all of our work is driven through the lens of children’s rights. This is why our membership of Together is crucial to our work. The team at Together support us with the latest research, knowledge and children’s insights into the UNCRC and keep a focus on how bullying is a violation of children’s rights to safety, education, equality and friendships.
We influence, challenge and effect change around bullying and stigma at an individual, school, family, community, and societal level. We also campaign at a national level to raise awareness of the service and the impact bullying can have on young lives, where mental, physical and emotional wellbeing can all be undermined.
This year Anti-Bullying Week takes place from Monday 11 to Friday 15 November. The focus of our week-long campaign will be to encourage everyone to talk and think about how the power of respectful relationships can help to prevent bullying.
“Respect – what does this mean to you?”
Lorraine Glass, respectme‘s Director, said:
“When we posed this question for Anti-Bullying Week 2024 we realised that everyone will have their own personal take on what ‘respect’ means to them, which was why we also offered the prompt themes of ‘What does it sound like?, What does it feel like?, What does it look like?‘
We are really hopeful that this challenge will spark great conversations in schools, homes and youth groups all over Scotland. We want to help young people to truly understand that bullying is a violation of their rights and to reflect on the role that respect plays in upholding them. When we promote respect, we prevent bullying.
For me, I feel respected when I am listened to (and heard!), when I am treated fairly and when good, healthy, trusting relationships can be sustained even where there are points of disagreement or difference.”
