Clan Childlaw and Together Secure Funding to Advance Children’s Rights Across Scotland

Clan Childlaw and Together (Scottish Alliance for Children’s Rights) are delighted to announce that they have been awarded funding from the Independent Human Rights Fund for Scotland, managed by the Corra Foundation. This partnership will support action to realise and defend children’s rights and tackle immediate rights issues affecting children and young people across Scotland.

Clan Childlaw brings a unique, practice-based experience of representing children and young people and standing with them as they assert their rights. Clan’s expertise includes addressing systemic problems through strategic legal action and working closely with children to ensure their voices are heard and their rights are upheld. This experience will allow Clan to apply a legal lens to the information gathered through Together’s extensive membership network, ensuring systemic issues are identified and addressed effectively.

Clan Childlaw is an award-winning, independent children’s charity that actively supports children and young people to take ownership of their rights.  We are the only charity in Scotland that provides free, independent representation exclusively for children and young people, which is child-centred by design.  Through this project, Clan Childlaw will be able to help build capacity in the sector to challenge rights breaches, and use the information escalated by Together members to identify systemic issues which would benefit from legal challenge.

Alison Reid, Chief Executive of Clan Childlaw said,

‘This funding will enable a Scotland-wide approach to identifying patterns and systemic issues regarding children’s rights, helping to close the gap between policy and practice. By using strategic litigation and building the capacity of the children’s sector, the project aims to create significant and lasting change in the lives of children and young people.’

Together (Scottish Alliance for Children’s Rights) is a coalition of over 600 charities and professionals working to promote and protect children’s rights in Scotland. Through this project, Together will support its members to identify and escalate concerns about children’s rights and build their capacity to use the law to hold duty bearers to account.

Juliet Harris, Director of Together, said:

“This partnership is a crucial step in our work to ensure children’s rights are fully implemented across Scotland. By building the capacity of our members to use the law effectively, we can support babies, children, and young people to raise concerns about their rights – helping to bridge the gap between what is promised in law and what children experience in their daily lives.”
