Membership Spotlight – Health and Social Care Alliance Scotland People at the Centre (The ALLIANCE)

Membership Spotlight highlights the work of our member organisations and outline how other individuals and NGOs can support them. Below we shine the light on The ALLIANCE’s Health and Social Care Academy and Children and Young People Programme in partnership with Together (Scottish Alliance for Children’s Rights) to host a panel discussion as part of the Being Human Series, ‘UNCRC: Beyond Incorporation’.

Event date: Tuesday 29th August 2023
Event time: 10:00 – 12:00
Event location: Online, Zoom

The ‘Being Human’ series explores the importance of embedding human rights into health and social care policy and practice and will highlight the stigma, discrimination and inequality faced by disabled people, people living with long term conditions and unpaid carers in Scotland.

The Scottish Government has made a strong commitment to protect children’s rights through the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (Incorporation) (Scotland) Bill. The bill recently passed its two-year anniversary and children’s rights are still not fully protected in law. It is important that Scottish Government advances this legislation, and that individuals and organisations continue to work to protect and uphold children’s rights and look beyond incorporation.

By the end of the session, we hope attendees will:

  • Find out more about recent developments in children’s rights, including where we are with incorporation
  • Have a greater understanding of how to implement UNCRC in practice
  • Have heard promising practice and innovative examples of how organisations are already championing children’s rights in health and social care
  • Have had an opportunity to ask questions to our panelists

The ALLIANCE have recently produced an explainer document, highlighting the importance of human rights and the Human Rights Act 1998 in Scotland. You can access these resources on the ALLIANCE website.

This event will be of interest to those working in the children and young people sector who are keen to hear more about the implementation of the UNCRC in the context of health and social care.

We are delighted to confirm, Kayla-Megan Burns will Chair the event. Kayla is a social justice leader with specific focuses in climate, gender, and disability and the current Convener of Disability Equality Scotland.

Speakers on the day include:

  • Nick Hobbs, Head of Advice & Investigations of Children and Young People’s Commissioner Scotland
  • Sarah McDermott, Development Manager, Together Scotland,
  • Rhona Matherson, Chief Executive, Starcatchers,
  • Ellie Craig, Vice Chair of Scottish Youth Parliament and MSYP for Glasgow Cathcart
  • Mark Ballard, Head of Policy and Influencing for Scotland, National Deaf Children’s Society
