Membership Spotlight – Man On! Inverclyde

Membership Spotlight highlights the work of our member organisations and outline how other individuals and NGOs can support them. It’s the start of October, a brand new month, we want to share learning and work from one of our latest new members. Below we shine the light on Man On! Inverclyde and what they are currently working on.

How long have you been a member of Together?

We are a new member of Together but absolutely delighted to join. We are looking forward to contributing to this membership and learning more about what we can all do to support young people better.

Tell us about the work of your organisation in Scotland (e.g where, type of work, who works for you etc).

Man On! Inverclyde is a mental health, wellbeing and suicide prevention charity based in Greenock, Scotland. We support young people and adults with their wellbeing, from crisis point right through to projects such as Football Therapy in the community. Our team are made up of staff and volunteers who have the same values and a passion for a rights based approach to building relationships.

What projects are you currently working on?

Lots! We are in schools supporting young people in groups and 1-1 supports, and we run a community-based wellbeing project that supports young people at various points in their journey.

How do you support children and families to learn about their rights?

All of our work is driven by young people. They tell us what gaps are in the community and we work together to fill them. We teach them about children’s rights and the UNCRC and we have embarked on collaborative work with the Children’s Rights Officer.

How can children and young people make their views heard to influence your work?

Young People can get involved in various levels of work with us, from members needing support to young volunteers helping with peer support. Feedback is crucial for us, and we take action from it. Amplifying the voices of our young people has never been more important.

Does your organisation influence policy development on issues affecting children and young people? If so, please share an example.

We are working at a local level to influence and impact key areas of suicide prevention policy and how services can be more trauma-informed. Our work in schools has been crucial to removing the stigma on key areas and we hope to influence this as we go. We are beginning to work on a national level with some projects, using our learning and evidence to shape ideas and ways of working. We believe our approach is innovative, and know it works.

What do you enjoy most about being a member of Together?

It is very early in our membership but I have been impressed with the vast level of resources on offer.

How can other organisations or individuals get involved or support your work?

They can find us on social media @ManOnInverclyde – reach out and we can chat about how we can work with you.

If your organisation was an animal what would it be and why?

Haha! Can I say a penguin, due to the fact it’s my favourite?

I would say we are an elephant! A baby elephant in our infancy finding our feet in the first few years in 2020, but now using our massive ears to listen to our community and put it into practice. Elephants can be some of the most supportive animals to each other, so that sense of community and listening to what people need is vital! Elephants have receptors in their trunks too, and I think through our lived-experience we can tell when there is a genuine feeling in a room, and when it is not! Elephants are also cool, so that helps!
