Membership Spotlight – Families Outside

Membership Spotlight highlights the work of our member organisations and outline how other individuals and NGOs can support them. We are shining the light on Families Outside who have now been a member of Together for three years. Specifically, in this spotlight, we highlight their new dates for Training for Professionals.

Plus, they answer our new campaign #RightsOnTrack question!

Families Outside Training for Professionals: New Dates Added Due to Popular Demand

Families Outside are a proud member of Together, dedicated to children’s rights in all of our work to support families affected by imprisonment.

Together’s #RightsOnTrack campaign is all about making sure that ALL children in Scotland have ALL of their rights ALL of the time. Families Outside is calling for Recommendation 39 of the UNCRC Concluding Observations to be put into practice, to ensure the best interests of the child are a primary consideration in decisions around a parent’s sentencing or imprisonment, with alternatives to custody considered where possible. Action must also be taken for children with a parent in prison, including through financial support for prison visiting and for remote contact. You can sign-up to Together’s #RightsOnTrack campaign by clicking this hyperlink to register to their mailing list.

Families Outside are the only national charity in Scotland working solely on behalf of children and families affected by imprisonment. We provide training aimed at all professionals whose role means they come into contact with families, and who feel that they would benefit from being able to better support families who are affected by imprisonment. Our next round of training is coming up in March, with new dates added due to popular demand – and we’d love to see you there!

Our training modules are designed to provide an understanding of the impact on children and families when a family member is sent to prison. The modules also look at what support families might need at different stages of the criminal justice process – whether someone’s relative has just been arrested, is serving a prison sentence or is due for release.

The modules also aim to develop the knowledge and skills of participants and encourage them to consider their own current practice and how this could be further improved to support children and families affected by imprisonment using their service, or who are in contact with their organisation.

The training modules aim to incorporate a mix of learning styles, and offer opportunities to interact with other participants from different professional backgrounds and sectors. We offer three training modules and you can choose to attend, 1, 2 or all 3.
